One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty\u27s scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 1999 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University\u27s laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during 1999 produced over 2,292 works, including 1,837 scholarly papers and articles, 78 books, 82 book chapters, 175 reviews, 113 creative works and 7 patented works. We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty which are in part reflected in this book, which illustrates the diversity of intellectual pursuits in support of research and education at the University of New Mexico

A case study of the modern orthodox and ultra orthodox sectors of Johannesburg Jewry with special reference to their educational institutions

Bibliography: pages 346-384.The study aims to portray the way of life and culture of the Modern Orthodox and Ultra Orthodox sectors of Johannesburg Jewry. It strives to show how this is translated into educational systems, and examines the attitudes and values of pupils at Johannesburg Jewish religiously orientated schools both towards their own education, as well as towards elements of Jewish and secular culture. An overview of Johannesburg Jewry is presented, and Jewish educational systems in Johannesburg are outlined. Although much of the study is descriptive and ethnographic, the focal point is the statistical analysis and discussion of the responses to a questionnaire which was administered to 159 pupils of four religiously orientated high schools. An overriding conclusion is that the samples exhibit a common pride in their Jewish heritage. The general level of religious practice and belief of the pupils of each school corresponds with that subgroup of Johannesburg Jewry with which the school is aligned. Thus the Ultra Orthodox are more comprehensive in religious practice than the Modern Orthodox. The level of religious practice of the pupils often exceeds that of their parents. This implies that the schools are, in certain cases, operating contra parentem

Continued professional learning and the experienced elementary school physical education specialist

An assumption associated with professional practice is that professionals will continue to grow and to learn following their preservice professional education programs (Houle, 1980). In the physical education literature, few studies have addressed this type of professional development (Locke, 1984). The purpose of this inquiry was to gain insight into the meaning-perceptions of four experienced elementary school physical education specialists concerning the nature of continued professional learning. Information regarding the specialists' meaning-perceptions was obtained in a series of three in-depth open-ended semi-structured interviews with each specialist. All interviews were audio taped, transcribed, and studied. Inductive analysis (Guba & Lincoln, 1981; Lincoln & Guba, 1985) and the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Lincoln & Guba, 1985) were employed to interpret the data, or four "stories," collectively. Utilizing a "constructed knowledge" (Belenky, Clinchy, Goldberger, & Taule, 1986) way of knowing, insight was gained into the specialists' meaning-perceptions concerning the nature of continued professional learning
